CHAPTER 13

Sebastian

It’s nearly dusk. The Twig stirs to life while Dominus and I prepare for our walk north to meet Remy and Sachi. The room has been set to order, my things are packed, and Dominus insists on carrying my bag for me.

Untangling myself from the warm cocoon of Dominus’s arms was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I don’t want to leave him, but our inevitable parting has already been set in motion. I long for a sign that he wants me to stay, but beyond an incredible romp in the sheets, he’s given me nothing. So I’ll go, but I know I’ll think of him when I’m living in The Dozen’s fancy castle. I’ll wonder how he is, what he’s doing, and whether he misses me, as I’ll miss him.

Tears threaten to cloud my vision. I blink them away. Dominus is an incubus, and no matter how attached I feel, our union is just one of many dalliances in his long life of partners. Normal for him, though a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. I won’t embarrass myself by getting emotional. At least not until I’m alone.

I startle as Rizpah arrives. She sweeps into the room without knocking, a melancholy expression on her face and packages in both hands.

Though we don’t share a language in common, we manage to understand one another perfectly well. I tuck the colorful scarf she made me closer around my neck and offer her a smile.

She gives the packages to Dominus to put in my pack. It was half-empty when I first got here, and will be stuffed full as I depart.

With her hands free, she reaches up to frame my face, warm palms on my cheeks.

“Örülök, hogy megismertelek. Remélem meglatogatsz majd minket.”

Dominus translates for her. “Rizpah says it was a pleasure to meet you, and she hopes you’ll come back to visit.”

“Likewise.” I lean down to kiss her cheek. “I hope so too.”

Though a visit would mean getting attached all over again. I’m not sure how this happened so fast. Dominus is such a comforting presence at my side. With every fiber, I’m aware of him, even when my gaze is on Rizpah, like a warm, reassuring hug and a protective shield all at once. Tearing myself away from him is going to hurt. No amount of bracing will prepare me for it.

“A batyukban finomságok vannak az útra, és egy kis meglepetés mikor megérkezel.”

“She says the packages are treats for your journey, plus a little something extra to open when you arrive,” Dominus relays as Rizpah smooths the scarf’s tasseled ends down my chest.

She steps back, and Dominus takes my elbow. “Best not keep them waiting.”

Is he that eager to be rid of me? I sigh, say a final good-bye to Rizpah, and walk toward the exit. With a last look at the opulent parlors, I burn the place in my memory—the deep jewel tones, the golden velvet curtains, even the perfumed air as if rose bushes could flourish underground.
